  • Doune Castle aka Castle Leoch

We start the day in Edinburgh at 8.45am and head to the famous Doune Castle past Linlithgow Palace. Doune Castle is not only one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland; it’s also a movie star! Most recently it starred as Castle Leoch, the home of Clan MacKenzie in the hit series Outlander, but it wasn’t the castle’s first time on big screen.  It was used as a film set for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Winterfell from Game of Thrones to name a few.

After exploring the castle on we go to Fife, one of the remaining ancient kingdoms of Scotland that is often referred to as ‘Scotland in miniature’, because of its stunning nature, turbulent history and unique culture. We make a stop in Culross, the town that was used as Cranesmuir where Claire and Geillis were accused of witchcraft and Claire barely managed to escape before being burned at the stake. It was a close call!

We’ll spend the afternoon in the village of Falkland that was used as 1940’s Inverness in Outlander. It packs a lot of listed buildings for a small village, but if you are not interested in pretty, old buildings you can always try to chase Jamie’s ghost around the square.

Our journey continues to another iconic Outlander sites, Dysart Harbour used as the French port of Le Havre in season two before our final stop at Midhope Castle*. Get ready for the tears of joy and a lot of excitement when we hang around Jamie’s peaceful home, the real-life Lallybroch before arriving back in Edinburgh for 5.30pm.

This tour is a must for all Outlander fans!

* Please note that there are dates throughout the year where Midhope Castle and Doune Castle are closed for estate activity and filming.

Doune Castle

Doune Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval strongholds that have truly left its mark on the big screen. It has survived through the wars and rebellions of Scotland for centuries and has a story or few to tell.  In addition to its interesting history, the castle has also seen its fair share of stars. It has been featured in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail and more recently used as setting for Winterfell in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones and Castle Leoch, the home of Clan MacKenzie in Outlander.
